There is a reason why winning football teams invest so much in their junior development programs: if you don’t have talent coming through, you won’t be winning for long.
There are technicians that have been building and remanufacturing turbos for over 30 years at GCG Turbochargers, established in 1979.
The company’s current Workshop Manager, Josh Lambe, started as an apprentice with GCG back in the early 2000s.
“We have an excellent depth of field with our technicians. There is over 100 years’ worth of combined turbo experience in our workshop, mixed in with skillsets of aeronautical fitters, auto electrical and diesel specialists. Our apprentices have a massive inventory of knowledge to draw down on,” Josh said.
This year, Jarrod Walton overcame the challenge of completing a good proportion of his studies for his trade during the COVID-19 pandemic
and became a fully qualified tradesman in February.
Riley Lloyd is in the third year of his apprenticeship and is also the third generation of Lloyds in the business with Riley’s late grandfather being one of the founding partners of GCG Turbochargers and his father Brett being the Managing Director.
The most recent addition to the team is local 18-year-old Angelo Stellos. He applied for the role after Josh, the Workshop Manager, had advertised through all the normal channels without a great response.
Josh wrote to all the careers advisors at every high school within a 15km radius. Angelo applied and was clearly the right person for the job with a great technical understanding and – even before he could legally drive – had carried out extensive restoration work on his more than 20-year-old Honda Integra.
“An increasing number of our clients are finding it harder and harder to find and retain good staff, and the automotive industry is struggling to attract new people,” GCG Managing Director, Brett Lloyd, said.
“I am proud of the team we have, the succession plan and watching our people grow within the business. Completing a trade is a great foundation block for any career and doesn’t leave you with a heap of debt once completed.
“With the global shortage in specialised trade people, by completing a trade with us there could be opportunities available with our sister company GCG Turbos Japan, plus the worldwide turbocharger industry from OEM to aftermarket.”
