TESTING FUEL FILTERS
There are big differences between top quality and cheap options
With fuel filters, it is like so often in life: it is not what is on the outside that makes the difference, but what is on the inside that really matters.
Global filtration expert MANN+HUMMEL says that experts know this, and therefore rely on original equipment quality such as that from MANN-FILTER when it comes to changing fuel filters.
Modern injection systems react sensitively to impurities in the fuel. Even microscopic particles can cause major damage.
MANN+HUMMEL says this is why its brand MANN-FILTER offers fuel filters in original equipment quality with a high degree of filter fineness.
It states these filters reliably protect all engines, preventing often expensive breakdowns and repairs, for example, to injectors and cylinders.
The smallest particles in the range of a few micrometers are reliably separated – this is dirt barely visible to the naked eye.
Fuel filtration depends on qualities such as high filter efficiency, stability and a long service life. However, in-line fuel filters available on the market vary greatly in terms of type and quality.
From the outside, these “cans” generally look very similar. Only a close look inside reveals more about the design, materials and functions of these top-quality filters.
To demonstrate this point, MANN+HUMMEL examined two petrol fuel filters which had been in use for many years and have clearly been used in vehicles for longer than the specified service interval.
Both were in-line fuel filters with metal housing and still with original seals: one is an OEM quality filter, the other is a low-quality variant.
After opening the aluminum housings on a lathe, the cover of the OEM-quality filter was spotlessly clean, and the O-ring remained soft and elastic even after many years; while the front end plate of the low-quality filter was massively deformed, and the filter medium had collapsed.
As such, MANN+HUMMEL states it is clearly in the interest of the car owner to regularly replace the fuel filter with a quality filter. With inferior filters not being much cheaper, MANN+HUMMEL says branded products pay off not only for vehicle owners, but also for workshops, which invest in long-term customer loyalty.
“Only a high-quality fuel filter optimally protects the sensitive injection system from abrasion,” MANN-FILTER Product Manager Fuel Filters, Frank Bartel, said.
“But from the outside, even experts find it hard to distinguish the performance of the filters. You can find the quality on the inside. For these kinds of situations, you can rely on MANN-FILTER.
The MANN-FILTER fuel filter range has almost 94 percent market coverage in Europe, with the current range including more than 980 OE quality fuel filters.
