BENDIX PROGRESSES SUSTAINABILITY GOALS

Amongst other initiatives, Bendix’s new packaging helps consumers be more environmentally friendly

When launched in 2022, Bendix’s EV-Hybrid Disc Brake Pads introduced many benefits for owners of these vehicles who were keen to reduce their environmental impact.
As well as featuring copper-free, organic brake friction material that allowed the pads to be certified to the Automotive Aftermarket Suppliers Association (AASA) ‘N’ measure, the product line also heralded new sustainable packaging innovations.
The packaging includes the use of Hexcel Wrap which protects the pads in a similar way to bubble wrap and shrink wrapping, but is made of this paper product which is 100 percent recyclable.
The exterior packaging is also sustainable and made of FSC Certified carboard – this means that 70 percent of the packaging comes from FSC certified or recycled materials, while 30 percent is made from controlled wood.
Using the learning from the EV-Hybrid pad program, Bendix says it is now progressing other packaging initiatives to boost sustainability, including modifying box sizes to provide a closer product fit.
The move will see Bendix increase the number of carton sizes from three to 11, which will lead to three key sustainability improvements.
Firstly, the snug fitting packaging reduces the need for filling material.
Additionally, resources are saved by manufacturing packaging that doesn’t use more materials than is required.
A further benefit is saving valuable space within Bendix’s warehouses as well as at customers’ distribution centres and stores.
The roll out of these sustainability initiatives has already begun and can be seen in the Calibre range that Bendix develops for Supercheap Auto.
