GREENER THAN EVER
Halray Brake Reconditioning now operates on 100 percent solar power while remaining committed to remanufacturing and the sustainability benefits it brings
Remanufacturing is the disassembling, repairing, replacing, and reassembling of a part to restore it to a new or better than new like condition.
Halray Brake Reconditioning in Lismore in New South Wales has been remanufacturing brake components for the automotive (passenger and commercial) agriculture, mining, rail, and aeronautical industries since the mid-1960s.
But when the record February 2022 flood hit Lismore, it inundated the Halray workshop and swallowed their equipment.
Justin and Dianne, who have operated Halray Brake Reconditioners for the last 25 years, experiencing the flood was devastating – it felt like all the years it has taken to build their distinctive business dissolved in the flood waters overnight.
“We soon came to see that rebuilding what we lost was the only way through the devastation of the flood – and it shed a whole new light on our commitment to the environmental sustainability of our remanufacturing business, given climate change will more than likely lead to more ‘big floods’ in Lismore,” Justin said.
“The tremendous outpouring of support from our customers and suppliers gave us the strength to rebuild our workshop after this undeniable climate disaster.
“Many consumers do not see remanufactured parts as quality goods. Despite the benefits, most consumers only turn to remanufactured goods when a new product is unavailable, or the cost of a new product is too expensive.
“To us, remanufacturing is the cornerstone of the sustainable supply of goods.
“It requires fewer virgin raw materials than new products, and it reduces the volume of discarded products or materials sent to landfill.
“Also, remanufactured goods only require 15 percent of the energy used to make new products.”
As part of their rebuilding effort since the flood, Justin and Dianne installed solar panels on their workshop and now operate on 100 percent solar power – making their remanufacturing business greener than ever.
